Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your third molars are what we usually refer to as “wisdom teeth.” The name comes from the idea that those teeth come in once we’re a bit older and wiser than we were when the rest of our teeth did. Generally speaking, wisdom teeth are fully developed by the time most of us turn 30 years old. But they can start to make an appearance — and cause painful swelling — as early as our teen years.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth’s location in the back of the mouth puts them at a statistically higher risk of tooth decay, gum disease, impaction, and painful cysts. They can also press into their neighbouring teeth, causing additional damage. Some people also experience crowding or orthodontic relapse due to the pressure that’s created as wisdom teeth erupt.

What if my wisdom teeth aren’t causing me any pain?

Not everyone needs to book wisdom tooth removal surgery. As part of the assessment, our Angel Dental Care dentist will order an X-ray that allows us to see the placement of your wisdom teeth as they relate to the surrounding oral anatomy. From there, we can determine whether it’s best to monitor the situation or proactively have them taken out.

What to expect during an extraction?

Should you need a wisdom tooth extraction, we will treat the procedure as any other type of tooth removal or oral surgery. Effective numbing medication is used to desensitise the entire area around your tooth so that we can remove it in the most painless manner possible. Be sure to follow your home care instructions properly to avoid potential infection or unnecessary complications as your body heals.
